Day 14 – Loveland Pass to Boulder, CO
I awoke and spent my first two hours on the bike riding up Loveland pass. 35 degrees makes for a good riding coach that is always there to remind you not to stop. The rest of my day could be downhill as I desperately search for passage from Georgetown to the peak to peak highway. I break through and am offered a choice between an uphill to Nederland or a downhill canyon ride through route 6. I opt for route 6 and get a stressful 12 mile course in return dotted with ‘No Bicycles” signs, no appreciable shoulder, and 4 100 yard tunnels. I did get to see a bighorn sheep and it’s kid.

Day 13 – Buena Vista, CO to Loveland, CO via Leadville
I was able to revisit Leadville for the first time since 1989. Very historic, my first restaurant of choice said no bike shoes….I opted for chinese. Fremont pass was a breeze compared to Cottonwood pass. 80 miles, two big climbs, great weather, and nicely maintained bike paths between the ski areas.

Day 12 – Gunnison, CO to Buena Vista, CO
38 miles of climbing brokem down into two 19 mile phases. Phase 1 was on pavement and featured 3 hours of freezing rain. Phase 2 was up Cottonwood pass and on a dirt road. 70 miles total capped off by a 20 mile downhill.

Day 11 – Cimarron, CO to Gunnison, CO
I took it easy today due to a 38 mile uphill tomorrow and a chilly night of camping last night. I was going to camp in the Gunnison canyon but due to a map reading error I ended up in a small campground just east of Gunnison.
